Burgundy is a deep red with a purple, wine-like undertone, named after the red wines of Burgundy in France. For autumn/winter 2026 it is the red people are looking up, in five languages and under several names: burgundy, bordeaux, Burgunderrot, oxblood, wine red. What follows is a field report on the deep reds: how to tell them apart, the search data behind the season, what to wear them with, and why the colour reads best in leather.
The red in the search bar
Colour forecasts are written months ahead, in studios. Search data is written by everyone else, in real time. And this autumn it points in one direction. In the United States, monthly Google searches for “burgundy color” fell to about 92,000 in June 2026 and were back at about 147,000 by September, the level of November 2025, according to Ahrefs (data retrieved October 2026). Deep red is, before it is anything else, a cold-weather colour.
The growth is sharper closer to the body. Searches for a burgundy phone case in the US were 98 per cent higher over the last twelve months than the twelve before. In the Netherlands, where the English word is searched beside the Dutch bordeauxrood, “burgundy kleur” rose 238 per cent. In Germany, “Handyhülle bordeaux” is still a small search, but it nearly quadrupled.
Pantone went the other way. On 4 December 2025 it named Cloud Dancer (PANTONE 11-4201), a white, its Colour of the Year 2026. What people type suggests a different mood: less blank canvas, more cellar. It is also the season our own deep red, the Chianti line, was made for.

Is burgundy the same as maroon?
No, though they sit side by side. Burgundy leans towards purple, like the red wine it is named after. Maroon leans towards brown; the word comes from the French marron, chestnut. Oxblood is darker and browner still. In Dutch, French and Italian, bordeaux is simply the usual name for burgundy.
The confusion is understandable. All four sit in the same narrow band of dark red, and the difference is the undertone, not the depth. Read them side by side:
| Name | Named after | Tone | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burgundy | The red wines of Burgundy, France | Deep red with a purple undertone | English-language fashion and interiors |
| Bordeaux | The red wines of Bordeaux, France | The same deep wine red as burgundy | Dutch, French and Italian; in German beside Burgunderrot |
| Maroon | French marron, chestnut | Brownish red, less purple | Knitwear, outerwear, team colours |
| Oxblood | The colour of ox blood | Very dark red with a brown undertone | Leather: shoes, bags, small leather goods |
| Cherry red | Ripe cherries | Clear, bright red, no dark undertone | Lacquer, lipstick, glossy finishes |
What colour is oxblood?
Oxblood is a very dark red with a brown undertone, darker than burgundy and browner than maroon. The name is literal, and to our eye it is a leather word. It is the red of polished shoes, briefcases and wallets, where a dense, dark colour shows the grain of the surface instead of hiding it.
That is the useful test. Hold a red up to the light: if the shadows turn purple, it is burgundy; if they turn brown, it is oxblood. Plenty of reds sit between the two, and that is no flaw: it is what makes them change with the light.
Is burgundy red or purple?
Burgundy is a red. It carries a purple, slightly blue undertone, and that is what separates it from maroon and oxblood, which both lean brown. In daylight it reads as red; in low evening light the purple comes forward. Cherry red is the opposite case: a clear, bright red with no dark undertone at all.
Why deep red suits leather
A dark red needs a surface. On something flat and smooth it can look heavy, almost black. On a grained leather the light breaks across the texture, and the colour gains depth: red on the raised points, close to brown in the hollows. That is the whole argument for oxblood in leather, and it is why we chose a grain for ours.
Chianti is the Maison Molier name for that red: a deep oxblood burgundy with a cool, red-brown depth. It is cut in full-grain Saffiano cow leather, the cross-hatch finish developed in Milan in 1913, and made by hand by the artisans of our atelier in Italy. It carries a proprietary coating, developed in that atelier, that resists the friction of pockets and bags. How Saffiano is made is covered in our field guide to Saffiano.
Colour on a phone is a different decision from colour on a coat. You hold your phone a hundred times a day; it is the colour you see most, at closer range than anything you wear. The Chianti iPhone Case puts the red there, with a raised leather rim around a recessed lens and a magnet ring integrated under the leather, so accessories click onto the case itself. The Chianti MagSafe Wallet holds two cards and carries the same red. The range continues in a cardholder, a passport holder and a sunglass sleeve: one colour, one material, from the phone to the passport.
On the case, the wordmark is set in gold foil on the back. Inside, the stamps are tone-on-tone, so the red runs uninterrupted. We made the longer case for colour on a phone in The Leather iPhone Case, Reconsidered.
What colours go with burgundy?
Burgundy works best with quiet neutrals that share its warmth: camel, taupe, cream, chocolate brown and black. It also holds its own against navy and dark green. Avoid competing reds. A bright cherry next to burgundy makes both look slightly wrong, like two wines poured into the same glass.
In leather, the same rules apply. In our own palette that means Latte, a warm honey tan; Sabbia, a warm khaki taupe with a grey-green undertone; Moka, a dark chocolate brown; and Ombra, a deep black. A Sabbia cardholder beside a Chianti case reads like a camel coat over a wine-coloured knit: two neutrals, one of which happens to be red.
Does burgundy go with brown?
Yes. Burgundy and brown share a warm base, so they sit together without strain, the way a red wine sits on an oak table. The trick is contrast in depth: pair burgundy with a brown that is clearly darker or clearly lighter, never the same weight. Dark chocolate makes burgundy look redder; camel makes it look deeper.
Our darkest brown, Moka, reads near-black at the edges and warms to chocolate in the light. A Moka iPhone Case with a Chianti MagSafe Wallet on the back is the quietest way we know to wear the season: brown first, red as the second note.

Burgundy, briefly
Is burgundy the same as bordeaux?
In practice, yes. Both name a deep wine red after a French wine region. English speakers mostly say burgundy; Dutch, French and Italian speakers mostly say bordeaux, and German uses Burgunderrot and Bordeaux side by side.
Is burgundy out of style in 2026?
Not on the evidence of search. US searches for “burgundy color” over the twelve months to September 2026 were 16 per cent higher than the twelve months before, and Dutch searches for “burgundy kleur” rose 238 per cent (Ahrefs, October 2026).
Is a burgundy phone case a good choice?
If you want colour without noise, yes. In a dark, grained leather, deep red behaves like a neutral and sits with camel, taupe, brown and black. Look for full-grain leather, a raised leather rim around the camera, and a magnet ring inside the case if you use MagSafe accessories.
How do you care for burgundy leather?
Wipe it with a dry cloth. For a mark, use a slightly damp cloth and press rather than rub. A little beeswax, used sparingly, is enough. Never use mink oil, silicone spray or heat.
