Yes. Leather does not block magnets, and it does not block wireless charging. What decides whether MagSafe works on a leather case is not the leather, it is how the case is built: whether it contains its own magnet array, and how much material sits between the phone and the accessory. Here is the difference between the two, and how to tell them apart before you buy.
Does leather interfere with MagSafe?
No. Magnetic fields pass through materials that are not ferromagnetic, and leather is not: it contains no iron, nickel or cobalt, so it neither attracts nor deflects the field. A magnet works through leather the same way it works through paper, wood or air.
What does weaken the connection is distance. The pull of a magnet falls away sharply as the gap grows, so every extra millimetre of material between the phone's magnet array and the accessory costs holding force. That is a thickness problem, and it applies equally to a case made of leather, plastic or fabric of the same thickness.
The materials that genuinely interfere are metal ones. Ferromagnetic metal redirects the field, and any conductive metal placed in an inductive charging field develops eddy currents, which oppose the field, waste power and heat the metal. This is why metal plates, metal rings and metal card holders behind a phone cause trouble, and why leather does not.
Why case construction matters more than leather alone
A MagSafe case is not simply a case that magnets can reach through. A properly built one carries its own ring of magnets, positioned to line up with the array inside the phone. Apple's accessory design guidelines, as reported from its developer documentation, set out how precisely that ring has to be positioned and how firmly it should hold, along with a case thickness in the region of two millimetres for a case intended to qualify as a MagSafe case.
That gives two very different products, both of which may be described as leather MagSafe cases:
- A case with an integrated magnet array. Accessories snap to the case itself, magnet to magnet. Alignment is exact, holding force is close to attaching directly to the phone, and a charger centres itself the first time.
- A case with no magnets. The phone's own magnets have to reach through the material. A wallet may hold, weakly, and will slide or drop under normal use. A charger may attach off centre and charge slowly or not at all.
The leather is identical in both cases. The experience is not. When a leather case is described as MagSafe compatible, the question worth asking is whether the magnets are in the case or only in the phone.
Does leather affect wireless charging?
Not meaningfully, at the thicknesses cases are made in. Inductive charging works through non-conductive materials, and leather is non-conductive. Independent bench testing of charging with and without a case has found the difference to be a few tenths of a watt and several minutes over a full charge.
Apple's own troubleshooting advice is about bulk rather than material: if the phone is charging slowly, remove a thick case, a metal case or a battery case. A figure of "up to three millimetres" circulates widely as the limit for wireless charging through a case, and it is worth knowing that this number comes from accessory makers rather than from Apple or the Wireless Power Consortium. The Apple sourced figure, roughly two millimetres, is a design guideline for case manufacturers, not a consumer specification.
What genuinely stops charging: metal anywhere in the sandwich, a card or a hotel key left between the phone and the charger, or a case thick enough to hold the coils too far apart.
Do you need magnets inside a leather case?
If you use MagSafe accessories, yes. A wallet, a car mount, a stand or a charger all depend on a firm, centred attachment, and without magnets in the case only the phone is doing the work through the material.
If you never attach anything and charge with a cable, a case without magnets will not stop you. Everyone else should treat the magnet array as a specification, not a bonus. It is the part that cannot be added later.
Does a MagSafe wallet work on a leather case?
On a case with a magnet array, yes, and it behaves exactly as it does on bare glass: a centred click, and a firm hold that still releases with a thumb. What the wallet itself is, and what it can safely hold, is covered in what is a MagSafe wallet.
On a case without magnets it is the weakest configuration in daily use. The wallet is held only by what the phone's magnets can pull through the case, and a wallet has leverage. A jeans pocket, a bag strap or a coat lining will find that weakness within a week. The failure is rarely dramatic. The wallet slides down a few millimetres, sits crooked, then comes off somewhere you were not looking.
Does leather thickness affect magnetic strength?
Yes, and this is the only way leather comes into it at all. Every millimetre between the magnets reduces the pull, so a thick padded leather case holds an accessory less firmly than a slim one, whatever the leather quality.
This is where grained leathers earn their place in a case. A firm grained leather such as Saffiano holds structure at a thickness where a soft leather would need extra material or a foam backing to keep its shape, and it resists the scratching that shows first on smooth finishes. Does a MagSafe charger leave marks on a leather case?
It can, and this is a real effect rather than a defect. Apple has acknowledged that circular imprints can appear on soft surfaced cases where a MagSafe charger rests, and any leather that is soft, unsealed or vegetable tanned will take an impression from prolonged pressure and warmth.
Sealed grained finishes resist it far better than open pored, aniline leathers. If you charge overnight with the phone in a soft leather case, expect a faint ring in time. It is the same mechanism that puts a watch impression on a leather strap.
How to tell whether a leather case is MagSafe compatible
- Look for a stated magnet array. A case built with magnets says so in its specification. Vague wording such as "works with wireless charging" describes charging, not attachment.
- Check the wording of the certification. "Made for MagSafe" means the accessory is licensed by Apple and carries NFC identification. "MagSafe compatible" is an unlicensed description and covers a wide range of quality.
- Feel the attachment. A real magnet array pulls the accessory into position with a distinct click and holds it against a sideways push with a thumb. A weak hold that slides is the phone reaching through, not the case working.
- Look inside. On many cases the magnet ring is visible or can be felt as a raised circle in the interior lining.
- Watch the screen. On iPhone 12 and later, licensed MagSafe accessories trigger an on screen animation when attached, because the phone identifies them over NFC.

Does MagSafe work through a leather case?
